I did a session last week at Damon Albarn’s studio in West London. The project was based around Tony Allen, most known as the inventor of Afrobeat drumming and longtime collaborator of Fela Kuti. He’s also involved in a lot of Damon’s non-Blur projects.
On Jan 2nd I flew out to Chicago with temperatures hitting -35 to do a 5 day session with Steve Albini. This was the second record I’ve done with Steve but the first at his own Electrical Audio studio. He’s recently been recording Foo Fighters new album and has just remastered Nirvana’s ‘In Utero’ record. He’s also a world class poker player……
A tune I played on called ‘No Time To Speak’ is featured on the soundtrack to this new movie, ‘Stuck In Love’ starring Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Connelly. Elliott Smith is on there too! Out in cinemas now – check it!
I was back at The Pool recently for a friends album session (see previous post). We cut 11 drum tracks in one 14 hour day with the awesome engineer/mixer/producer Ben Thackeray. Ben’s just come off of the new My Bloody Valentine record. That’s how cool he is…..the record sounds pretty great too!
These pictures were taken over a 3 day stint at The Pool in Bermondsey….it’s basically a large tracking room which used to be a swimming pool (hence the name). It’s been used by Nick Cave, Jarvis Cocker, Bloc Party and loads more. It has a great drum sound and a nice collection of old drums n cymbals. I used my old Gretsch Round Badge and various Zildjian and Paiste cymbals. We knocked out 12 drum tracks in a day and a half including set up….all done to click to save some time!
Time flies when you’re hitting things – often randomly, always incorrectly – with bits of wood. MTV, not as good as ‘The Real World:San Francisco’, possibly better than ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’. Maybe.
I thought I’d post some photo’s of recording with Steve Albini. Basically, if you took a bunch of my favourite records, they’ve all been done by Steve. Nirvana’s ‘In Utero’, PJ Harvey ‘Rid Of Me’, the Pixies, the Jesus Lizard, Neurosis, Fugazi. The list is endless.
We spent just over a week at a studio called Black Box near Angers in France. He’ll only use one other studio in Europe, and that’s Abbey Road which is like, £1500 a day. He records straight to tape and get’s the best drum sound I’ve ever heard in about an hour. Steve Albini, we salute you.
